Another, and probably the best, choice for John McCain: Sarah Palin.

Written by Paul Zannucci on 8:32 PM

For those looking for someone a little more calm than Bobby Jindal, whose views on science and religion turn many off, there is a relatively large grassroots movement for John McCain to select Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska.

As well as other government positions, Palin has served two terms as mayor of Wasilla and is currently in her first term as Governor. While she has garnered a little bit of local controversy over her battles with Exxon, she is extraordinarily popular, with approval ratings showing up anywhere from the mid-eighties all the way into the 90's.

Advantages:

1) Youth

2) Female--welcome aboard Clinton supporters.

3) Extreme popularity in her own state that would probably translate somewhat nationally.

4) Conservative but moderate positions on some controversial topics. For instance, she is against abortion, but is a member of Feminists For Life, which manages to promote the pro-life position without much of the angry rhetoric that tends to make the battle so tiresome for so many of us. Also, while opposing gay marriage, she also signed a same-sex benefits law and used her first veto on legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners.

5) She has many of the same positions on global warming and energy policy as John McCain, though she is a bit more aggressive on the energy side, which should help to warm her constituency up.

6) She is known to be fearless in going after corruption and waste.

7) Most battleground states have women (I just got this from Wikipedia--I don't know if it's actually true).

8) She picked up my endorsement.

Negatives:

She is almost as inexperienced as Barack Obama, but not quite. Republicans are in no danger of losing Alaska. The liberal media will almost certainly attempt to portray her in some sort of demonic, medieval, pre-sufferance light, as they just won't be able to suffer through an attractive female Republican going up against their golden boy Obama. Newsweek has already compared her to Venezuelan socialist dictator Hugo Chavez.

I like Jindal, but I *love* Palin. She is the only candidate with legitimate conservatice credentials and principles who wouldn't alienate crossover/independent voters (PUMAs and ex-Hillary voters notably). And as a Mom of 5, Moms will come out in droves to support her (and McCain).

Her strengths complement McCain's - tough on spending and corruption, emphasis on accountability, but she adds a human interest and glamour factor which McCain needs to compete with the marketing of Obama's slick 'brand.'

jean, I couldn't agree with you more. This election isn't like any other, and I will be so disappointed if McCain chooses another white guy for the VP. You would think after over 210 years of being a nation a white guy, at least for the VP, could sit this one out.

Sarah Palin can attract more voters than Jindal. She's a wow pick -- none of the other men compare.

Mac Pick Palin Veep BEFORE Hil Campaigns w/Obama!

In addition to her overwhelming attraction on the oil/energy issue and the female/disaffected Hillary voters, her human interest story will generate millions and millions of dollars worth of publicity and media coverage — essentially free to the McCain campaign — more than offsetting Obama’s reported money advantage.

I would love to see her selected. Something tells me we're getting a more conventional choice, though.

A commenter on another post says it much better than I can:

"They say McCain reads the blogs, so here goes --

Senator McCain- Don't let the campaign kibbitzers muddle things up.

First and foremost, Sarah Palin shares your values. She killed the bridge to nowhere. Need we say more?

As for the politics, Sarah Palin transcends geography. Her constituency, like yours, goes beyond state lines.

She will get your ticket access to voters all over the country based on who she is and what she stands for. Because she's young, a woman, a mother with young kids, she will grab media attention more than any other potential candidate.

Gov. Palin also has a son in the active duty military. You have very wisely taken your son's service in Iraq off the table as a campaign talking point. That is and should be respected. But others can talk about it and reflect on what it means.

A McCain-Palin administration would be the first in memory which has family members in uniform during wartime from both the President and Vice President. That would be a powerful statement as to the importance of national service, especially in uniform.

Most importantly, any Vice President should be ready to step up and serve in the event she is needed. Frankly, who is really ever ready? Gov. Palin is as ready as anybody, she is a quick learner, and in her public career has exhibited the courage and decisiveness needed for a great leader.

Godspeed to you in your campaign and in making this important decision."

I can see it all now, Alaska Gov Sarah Palin’s husband, Todd, introducing Sarah as the next Vice President of the United States at the Republican National Convention later this summer, to the tune of Shania Twain’s “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face”.

    Here it is:

IN reply to " YES! Sarah Palin - now THAT's CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN". This country will have a change if Sarah Palin gets into office, increase in teenage pregenancy & increase in death rate(both mother & child)due to illegal abortions. She should first learn to run a household before you try to run the greatest country in the world!
